With a few warmer weeks recently we have seen a huge increase in sales as people start preparing their garden beds and propagating seeds.
We have just finished harvesting our winter crops, so will soon turn our beds over for the next season... with the help of our chooks. Then top up with some Biocharsoaked in our Organic Liquid Fertiliser - with the Biocharpre-charged this way we do not need to fertilise again until next year.
We are putting our seeds into Seed Soak for 24 hours before putting into Fertilpots for propagating (especially good for improving strike rate as we are using last years seeds). Now lets just hope the weather warms and we have some fine weekends to start planting.
Sadly, we have a lot of slugs and snails around... we put this down to a lack of heathly hedgehogs. This autumn we took 8 hedgehogs into rescue that had severe mange - the worse season we have seen. The feedback from the holistic vets seems to be that although we are organic, our neighbours continue to use roundup and other herbicides and pesticides (on their paddocks, crops, etc). Because these chemicals effect the food source of the hedgehogs, this weakens their immune systems. I would love to make our property a little safe hedgehog sanctuary but we cannot stop them wandering... any ideas?
Happy gardening, Monique, Warren & Co.
#Plant the Pot
Helping to reduce single use plastic.
With the increased public awareness in NZ banning single use plastic bags... eyes are now finally looking at other plastic products. This means that our efforts to get growers and garden centres to look at biodegradable options are finally moving ahead.
The introduction of Fertilpot NT's, which look like standard gardenpots and are more rigid, means that there is a more viable retail option. Trials are underway with selected nurseries and we have garden centres coming on board to sell and get customer feedback to help with retail and point of sale solutions.
We have retailers looking for organic growers... please get in touch if you have any contacts.

ORGANIC BIOCHAR & FERTILISER COMBO DEAL
Did you know that Biochar needs to be pre-charged with a good quality fertiliser or compost?
This is so that it absorbs all the nutrients and the structure of the Biochar holds onto them making them bio-available to your plants as needed - greatly reducing the amount of fertiliser you will need over the season.
This ideal combo deal includes (click on item for more details):
We recently attended the NZ Nursery industy trade day in Hamilton.
This was the first time a trade day has been held in the North Island for five years, so a great opportunity for nurseries, garden centres, retailers and those passioniate about the future of the industry.
As part of our display promoting our 'Plant the Pot' initiative. Our very handy sales manager Duncan, modified an old pallet in the warehouse and knocked up an awesome pallet planter. Most pallet planters are lined and filled with soil... but we found that ours was ideal for fitting 10cm Fertilpots perfectly, which means we can easily move and switch out plants with the season.
This pallet was very photogenic and has been requested... but not for sale!
Although our pallet was made without any plans, we have found many websites with instructions on how to make your own:
